9th WUC Squash – Overview Day 2

Championships 7 September 2016

KUALA LUMPUR The 9th World University Squash Championship 2016 is heating up as the first seed, Tsz Fung Yip from Hong Kong breezed through the semi-finals of the men’s individual event at the National Squash Centre, Bukit Jalil yesterday, 6 September.

With the withdrawal of the Egyptians due to unfortunate circumstances, Fung Yip was seen as the heir to the throne of the men’s crown and he certainly lived up to his billing as he quashed Malaysian hope, Muhammad Addeen Idrakie, 11-7, 11-7, 9-11, 11-7 in 40 minutes.

Fung Yip will meet Chi Him Wong from Hong Kong who staged a gallant come back from two games down to oust Ryunosuke Tsukue from Japan, 9-11, 3-11, 11-6, 11-4, 11-9.

The other semi-final will pit Malaysia’s Ivan Yuen who will go up against Joshua Masters from Great Britain who ended the run of giant-killer, Martin Mosnik from Slovenia.

Mosnik sensationally ended the run of 5/8 seed, Remo Handl from Switzerland in the third round, was upstaged by the second seed, Masters, 11-7, 11-7, 11-5.

In the women’s section, a history of sorts was created for the host nation, when both of their players went through the last four, setting up an all Malaysian affair.

First seed, Low Wee Wern will meet understudy, Nazihah Hanis Abd Razak while the other semi-final will pit Nada Mohamed Mahmoud Elkalaawy from Great Britain and second seed, Tsz Wing Tong from Hong Kong.

Elkalaawy struggled against Ka Yi Lee from Hong Kong, 12-10, 11-7, 5-11, 5-11, 11-4 before going through in 34 minutes. Wing Tong suffered a minor hiccup before overcoming Jinyue Gu from China, 11-6, 11-4, 5-11, 11-5 in 44 minutes.
