6th WUC Shooting Sport – Final Day

Championships 19 September 2016

BYDGOSZCS The very last day of the World University Championship in Bydgoszcz brought a lot of emotions and unexpected results. Zhiming Lu (CHN) confirmed his marksmanship and after claiming the silver in men’s 25 m rapid fire pistol he pocketed the gold in the men’s 25m standard pistol.

Men’s standard pistol is a non-Olympic competition that’s why the classification was based only on one round. From the very beginning the fans were watching a one man show of Slovenian Kevin Venta who the previous day won a gold medal in men’s 50 m pistol. Venta was shooting perfectly until … the last burst where he lost his unbelievable concentration and finally ended in 6th place. The gold medal went to Lu Zhiming who was shooting equally the whole round. The team classification was won by India dominating the Italian and Korean teams.

The next finale, men’s 50 m rifle prone was almost for all rounds dominated by the French shooters. Before the last round, Marcin Majka (POL) took effective shots which gave him the lead for the end of the competition. The bronze medallist from 2014 said he was fully satisfied with his preparations before the Championships. “I didn’t expected such good results, since many specific elements decide about the final result. I felt mentally strong knowing about my condition and did a lot to prepare for this championship. I was fully concentrated and the public was cheering, I love that actually. This gold medal means a lot to me, but my biggest success is a bronze medal at the Junior World Championship in 2014”, said Majka. Silver and bronze went to Frenchmen Brain Baudouin and Pierre Rodrigues.

Men’s double trap, the very last final of this WUC, was won by Alessandro Chianese (ITA). This shoot also decided Italy’s domination in the final classification. Chianese undoubtedly was leading in the qualification but in the final he had a demanding rival. Chinese Junjie Mo was a serious contender for the gold as well. In the middle of the final Mo was very close to victory but he spoiled the last shots and the extra time for both athletes determined the leader. The gold medal went to Chianese, his teammate Ignazio Maria Tronica took the bronze. “I didn’t have a lot of time before the championship for preparation that’s why I am even surprised I won a gold. This was my last championships as a student and I need to admit that Poland brings me luck. Six years ago in Wroclaw I got a medal as well”, Allesandro Chianese, a student of political science in Rome commented.
