FISU President speaks at Rectors’ Conference

RIJEKA – On 13 July, the 3rd European University Games will begin in Croatian cities of Zagreb and Rijeka. The Games are preceded by the Rectors’ Conference in the city of Rijeka, which brought together representatives from European universities to discuss university sports and its impact on education and society.

FISU President Matytsin present a FISU souvenir to President Kolinda Grabar-KitarovicSpeaking on the opening session of the Rectors’ Conference in Rijeka, FISU President Oleg Matytsin highlighted the role of FISU in promoting university sports on a global scale. He also outlined the key points of a 10-year strategy aimed at turning university sports into one of the key components for raising new leaders. Mr. Matytsin informed the audience about current educational events and projects – the FISU Forum and Conferences, the Anti-Doping Programme developed in cooperation with WADA, the International Day of University Sports, Volunteers’ Training Camp in Kazan. The FISU President also told the participants of the Conference about upcoming Universiades, noting, that in 2019 the Summer Universiade in Naples will mark the 60th Anniversary of Universiades.

FISU President Matytsin presents a FISU plaque to PM Tihomir OreskovicParticipants of the Conference were also welcomed by the Rectors of Zagreb University and Rijeka University, Mr. Damir Boras and Mr. Pero Lucin, as well as the President of EUSA Mr. Adam Roczek. Mr. Mark Emmert, the President of NCAA, National Collegiate Athletic Association of the US, was an honour guest at the conference, who shared NCAA experience and his view on the development of the university sports in the US.

Later that day, the delegation comprising Mr. Matytsin, Mr. Roczek, Mr. Emmert as well as FISU Vice-President Mr. Marian Dymalski, FISU Asessor Mr. Kemal Tamer and the President of the EUG Zagreb – Rijeka 2016 and the Croatian Academic Sports Federation, Mr. Zrinko Čustonja, met with the President of the Republic of Croatia Mrs. Kolinda Grabar-Kitarovic. This meeting was also followed by the meeting with the Prime-Minister of the Republic Mr. Tihomir Oreskovic. Both leaders welcomed the efforts of the organizers and stressed the importance and impact of the Games for community development.
