Buenos Aires hosted Successful 2016 JUSBA

BUENOS AIRES – The JUSBA, University South American Games Buenos Aires 2016, were hosted by Argentina, highlighting the magnificent and efficient efforts of FEDUA (Argentina University Sports Federation) in its role as host. These games were promoted by the COSUD (South American Confederation of University Sport) and confirmed the development experienced by the University Sport of the region. Approximately 1,000 athletes from 7 countries and leaders from 8, participated in the events and competed for a whole week in 9 sports, men and women, always emphasizing the Fair Play spirit: Athletics, Basketball 3×3, Football, Futsal, Handball, Swimming, Tennis, Table Tennis and Volleyball. A total of 275 medals were awarded. Argentina led the medal table (40 Gold, 36 Silver and 33 Bronze – total 109), followed by Brazil (24-18-19 – total 61) and Chile (21-27-23 – total 71).

Academic Forum

Concurrently, the academic event ‘South American University Sport Forum: sharing realities and challenges’ took place as well. At this forum, the delegates shared ideas and exchanged experiences about how the university sport is managed in each country of the region.

Extraordinary Assembly of COSUD

An Extraordinary Assembly of COSUD was held also. There it was decided to create a Rules Committee to adapt the COSUD statutes and regulations to the current FISU ones. Definitions of Mission and Vision for the organization were also established and lines of action aimed at improving communications through websites and social networks were outlined. It was decided as a main point, a strategy of institutional growth to be a source of information and transmission of values for university athletes from the region and to accentuate the visibility and recognition of COSUD in the region and in the world of university sport, strengthening and increasing its international relations. It was defined to support and spread the next FISU-related events such as the World University Futsal Championship to be held in Goiania, Brazil this year and the 2017 JUSBA to be held in Bogotá, Colombia.
