FISU Delegate meets University Sport Authorities in the Sultanate of Oman

MUSKAT – During a private visit in the Sultanate of Oman, FISU Vice-President Leonz Eder was invited by Dr. Salim Khamis Al-Araimi, Chairman of the Oman Committee for University Sports, to meet with several authorities of the country. The topics of the different meetings were the role of sports and in particular University sports for the society, the participation of Oman University Sports delegations both to Universiades and World University Championships and the possibility of Oman to host FISU events such as WUCs or Meetings and Forums.

First, Leonz Eder met with Dr. Said Hamed Said Al Rubaii, Secretary-General of the Education Council, followed by an audience with Dr. Abdullah Mohammed Al-Sarmi, Undersecretary in the Ministry of Higher Education. Dr. Abdullah stressed the fact that sport and physical education become more and more important in all school levels, from the Kindergarden up to the Universities, mainly because of the lack of exercise in the daily life and the danger of unhealthy nutrition. He underlined that his Ministry also supports the University Sport of Oman more than ever before.

The next visit was paid to the Oman Olympic Committee where Leonz Eder met with the Executive Director, Sulaiman Ali Al-Balushi, and Hisham Salim Al-Adwani, Director of Olympic Solidarity. They asked to be informed about the common goals between FISU and the IOC. After this discussion, Oman’s NUSA Chairman Salim Khamis Al-Araimi and his Head of Administrative and Financial Affairs, Mohammed Salim Al-Bahrani, organized a guided tour at the Oman Sports Medicine Center for the FISU delegate, followed by a visit in the Sultan Qaboos Sport Complex which hosts a lot of training and competition facilities both for different clubs as well as for individuals. Also Oman’s Committee for University Sports is organizing a lot of events in this big multisport complex.

Finally, Leonz Eder had the privilege to meet with Mr Rashad Ahmed Al Hinai, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Sports Affairs, and Mr Khalfan Al Nabai, Advisor of the Ministry of Sports Affairs. Mr Rashad mentioned that the budget for University Sport was significantly increased in the last years. He said that Oman will certainly continue to play an important role both in AUSF and FISU by sending teams to the events, but also by planning to organize such competitions and meetings in the Sultanate of Oman. The Undersecretary of the Ministry of Sports Affairs mentioned the importance of combining sport and other cultural elements. The FISU Vice-President underlined the fact that FISU, through its motto “Excellence in Mind and Body” and with its Educational Services, contributes a lot to a wide understanding of sports and in particular University Sports as a part of our culture. He also thanked all the authorities for the invitation to the different meetings and especially the Chairman of the Oman Committee for University Sports, Dr. Salim Khamis Al-Araimi for having organized this very interesting exchange of ideas and experiences between his authorities and the FISU representative.
