Multisports 27 September 2010

RECIFE The city of Recife became the capital of university sport in Brazil. More than 850 athletes from twelve states contest the finals of the 2010 Brazilian University Sports League’s team sports (futsal, handball, volleyball and basketball), between September 21st to 25th.

The competition brings together teams representing 25 universities that won regional and classification tournaments during the year. Several athletes who represented Brazilian’s team at the 2010 World University Championships are participating in the competitions of the Brazilian League.

From September 21st to 23rd, the teams played the classification stage. On Friday September 24th they disputed the semifinals of Brazilian League and the finals were played on Saturday, September 25th.

Outside the courts, more than 60 university students work as volunteers for the Brazilian League in several departments learning about the organization of big events. The League is also a space for young sports talents that may be playing or working at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.

The League is sponsored by the Brazilian University Sports Confederation (CBDU) and reaches its fifth edition hitting a record number of participants. Including the qualifications in the states and the regional and national stages of the League’s 2010 edition, more than 4,000 athletes were involved in the event.

In addition to the team sports (futsal, handball, basketball and volleyball), the Brazilian League’s 2010 season also included University Sport competitions of Beach Volleyball, Triathlon and Wrestling (Judo, Karate and Taekwondo), which were selection tournaments for the 2010 World University Championships, and also Soccer.

“The idea with the League is to strengthen and expand the schedule of events and competitions of national university sport making the educational institutions invest more in their teams and encouraging young people to sport,” said Luciano Cabral, CBDU President and FISU Vice-President.
