Multisports 21 November 2011

BRUSSELS –  Hardly a week before the final decision is taken by the FISU Executive Committee members which city to attribute the 2017 Universiades to, Bidding City Trentino withdraws its candidature for the 2017 Winter Universiade.

FISU was informed by the President of the Bidding Committee, Manuela Di Centa who told FISU that the Provincial Council of the Autonomous Province of Trento, in accordance with the Bidding Committee, has decided to abandon the candidacy for the Winter Universiade 2017.

The reason of withdrawal has to be found in the dire economic situation Italy finds itself in. ‘Due to the particular moment and to the particular economic context, the Council has considered it non convenient to proceed with the candidacy, in consideration of the high financial commitment required by the Organization’, Mrs. Di Centa explains in her communication.

‘It certainly is a pity especially with the Attribution date so close’, FISU Secretary-General/CEO Eric Saintrond contemplated. ‘FISU was extremely enthusiast to have two very strong candidates to host the Winter Universiade. Now we will be looking forward to the final presentation of Almaty, Kazakhstan, the remaining candidate for the 2017 Winter Universiade, while Brasilia and Taipei City are still in the running for the Summer Universiade.’

The Attribution will take place at the Executive Committee meeting in Brussels next Tuesday, November 29th.
