TAIPEI CITY – With 830 days away from the 2017 Summer Universiade, FISU delegates paid a three-day visit to Taipei City in order to meet with the new leaderships of the city government and the Organising Committee, as well as to catch up with the Organising Committee on the preparation and progress of the Universiade.
Led by the FISU Summer Universiade Director Marc Vandenplas, a delegation of three, including the Summer Universiade Manager Jing Zhao and Sport Assistant Melanie Stallecker were in Taipei from 11 to 13 May 2015.
The inspection visit kicked off on 11 May with the general progress meeting, chaired by the Deputy Mayor/OC CEO Ms. Li-Fang Chou. During the meeting, all 17 divisions of the 2017 Summer Universiade Organising Committee presented their reports on the division organisation, key responsibilities, staffing plan, progress and next steps. As one of the core parts of the Universiade preparation, separate meetings were organised in the afternoon to discuss sports and venues. The FISU delegates made their comments and suggestions on the presentations and exchanged their ideas with the Organising Committee. The Organising Committee expressed that they have gained valuable experience through the communication, and would take seriously the FISU’s comments into further consideration.
On the morning of 12 May, a general FISU seminar on the 2017 Summer Universiade planning and operation was held in the city hall of the Taipei City. Mayor Wen-Je Ko, together with all the commissioners of the relevant government departments attended this seminar. Being the speakers of the seminar, Mr. Vandenplas and Ms. Zhao introduced briefly the FISU and the Summer Universiade, and explained the planning streams and integration planning concept of such mega events. In addition, they also proposed the next steps and provided valuable recommendations on key functional areas in order for the Organising Committee to better carry on its development. Mayor Wen-Je Ko expressed his appreciation on this visit and on this seminar, and stated that the Organising Committee would try its best to cooperate with FISU in order to better deliver the Summer Universiade. FISU also had functional meetings on the new Organising Committee organisation chart and paid inspection visits to the sport venues.
On 13 May, further functional meeting and visit on the Athletes’ Village, as well as venue inspections to the sport venues will be organised, followed by the wrap up session in the afternoon.
