FISU Medical Committee comes to Lausanne

LAUSANNE – The FISU Medical Committee (CMI) came to the home of international University Sports from 24 to 26 May 2018 at the FISU federation’s headquarters. Participants were welcomed by Mr Eric Saintrond, FISU Secretary General – CEO, who highlighted the relevance of the Committee’s work not only at FISU events but equally in the current changing times in the medical and anti-doping field in sport.

 

The sessions were led by Prof. Dusan Hamar, Chair of the Committee. The two-day agenda covered various areas were the Committee is involved and included a progress report from the 2018 World University Championships, as well as summaries from the 2017 Summer and Winter Universiades.

Extensive discussion surrounded the current situation in global anti-doping fight and the direct and indirect implications to FISU. More information was also provided by a representative of the Doping-Free Sport Unit of GAISF, soon to be Independent Testing Authority (ITA), with which FISU had an on-going collaboration for its events. More than 400 tests are planned for the World University Championships this year.

 

An update on the Check-up Your Heart programme, which took place at the Summer Universiade in Taipei, was presented. This also included the perspectives for this project currently in preparation for this Universiade in the Italian city of Napoli.

 

The 2nd day of meetings brought about more administrative work, more focused on minimum requirements of FISU events, as well as work on the financial responsibilities of organising committees, participating countries and FISU in the context of medical care at events.

 

The Committee established a working group to study in further detail the specificities of insurance and associated coverages entailed in the medical field of sporting events. The meeting concluded with an extensive discussion around the topic of concussion in sport and the review of this specific item the FISU medical care regulations.
