7th WUC Match Racing - Day 4 of Competitions

LAGO DI LEDRO – Yesterday, 3 July, was the fourth day of racing on Lake Ledro, with the qualification of the crews for the quarter-finals and semi-finals of the 7th World University Match Racing Championship.

Once the final seven races of the first round-robin were accomplished, the Championship arrived at a turning point yesterday, with the qualifying for the quarter-finals racing to access the semi-final stage in the Open Category, that today will see the crews of Japan (Kohel Ichikawa), Australia1 (Samuel Gilmour), United States (Nevin Snow) and France (Pierre Quiroga) compete. Races for the 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th place in ranking will also be raced today with the Italian team of Valerio Galati, Singapore 1 and 2 of Justin Liu and Sean Leen, and the British Connor Miller.

In the Women's Category and with the start of the second round-robin, the British crew led by Annabel Vose continues to dominate the Championship that, with its 11 total points, was already qualified for the semi-finals. Trailing the Brits are FRA (Pauline Courtois) and SIN (Denise Lim) both with 8 victories, BRA1 (Juliana Motta Poncioni) 6. Closely following  are ITA (Federica Wetzl) and AUS1 (Tara McCall) with 4 race wins, AUS2 (Kathleen Stroinovsky) with 2 matches won, BRA2 (Marina Jardim Cardia) with only one victory.

In the meantime, races in the Open Category for the ranking from 13th to 19th place have started and are continuing.

Eight and a half hours of racing for this very long 4th day of the WUC, with matches in which the crews had a lot of fun. Good weather conditions, with sun and constant wind from the east, between 8 and 12 knots. No difficulties were recorded, except for a little injury to a Canadian athlete.

"The races of this seventh WUC Match Racing are influenced by the weather”, commented Nelson Ilha, an international referee with the experience of five Olympic Games, present in Ledro as coach and rule-advisor for the Brazilian teams. “However, everything is going very well and the athletes are happy and positive. I am impressed by the organization. It's really a wonderful experience."
