2nd WUC Speed Skating – Day 2 of Competitions

Speed Skating 19 December 2014

ALMATY – Jan Szemansky won the 5,000m race on the second day of the 2nd WUC Speed Skating at “Medeu”. Michele Malfatti (Italy) and Adrian Wielgat (Poland) came in second and third respectively. Everything was great, except the fact I’ve fallen down on the 1,000 meter distance. This win means a lot to me and having my teammate Adrian here makes it complete. It’s a great feeling to win here at Medeu”.

Mirco Giacomo Nenzi, the 25 year-old Italian athlete, was unbeatable on the 1,000 m, clocking a 1:11.08, he earned a clear lead over Piotr Michalski (POL), who followed with 1:11.10. “Of course I’m happy”, Nenzi said, “competition with Fyodor Mezentsev was pretty hard, but end I was first on the finish line”.

Almaty citizen Fyodor Mezentsev achieved the third podium result and took first medal for the Kazakhstani team with 1.11,55. “To win a medal on the 1,000 m was a priority. Everything went well, as I expected: the fight for “gold” developed in the last race. In order to win the first place I had to compete with Nenzi. Unfortunately, there was no strength enough at the finish line. The last few steps particularly were hard”, bronze medallist Fyodor Mezentsev, commented.

The Polish team members repeated first place in the women’s team pursuit, with Russia achieving second place and the Dutch team in third.

Katarzyna Wozniak (POL) repeated her first place at the 1,500m distance, Marina Zueva (BLR) and Elena Sokhryakova (RUS) showed a very good performance with 2:02,52 and 2:02,98 results being second and third.
