Argentina celebrated IDUS 2017 highlighting Dual Career Project

FISU 27 September 2017

ARGENTINA – On 20 September, the sports world celebrates the International Day University Sport which is promoted by FISU and proclaimed by UNESCO. As part of the celebrations of this important day and after the amazing experience at the 29th Summer Universiade of Taipei, FeDUA, the Argentinian member association of FISU hosted a welcoming reception for the leaders of different Argentinian sports federations, which were greeted in a downtown hotel.

Delegates from the national federations of Chess, Athletics, Badminton, Bosaball, Cestoball, Golf, Judo, Softball, Shooting Sport, Swimming, Skating, Netball, Taekwondo, Tennis, Handball, Volleyball, Wushu, Basketball, Table Tennis and Water Polo attended this meeting. FeDUA presented the achievements of the last five years and announced its next steps and projects.

Mario Moccia, Secretary General of the Argentine Olympic Committee (COA), was present as well and underlined that “the synergy between the different federations and Argentine University Sports is fundamental for the country’s sports development. It is fundamental that the whole sports system understands that both education and sport contribute to the integral development of a person, because the values of sport help build a better society,” he added.

After the presentation of all the attendees, FeDUA President Emiliano Ojea spoke about the experience at the Universiade of Taipei, where Argentina was present with a delegation of 258 persons, the largest in its history. The medal in Taekwondo obtained by Lucas Guzmán was key for FeDUA and the Argentine Confederation of Taekwondo as a good example of the Dual Career project. It facilitates athletes to continue their academic studies and their training at the same time. “Our work is a team effort that boosts the institutions and promotes the Dual Career project in such a way that young people do not have to choose between study and sport,” he explained.

The president of the Argentine Confederation of Taekwondo, Ignacio Gontán, emphasized “the role of FeDUA in order for athletes to study and have tools tomorrow.” This Confederation was the first one to embrace the Dual Career project. “Offering athletes the opportunity to acquire knowledge, we are helping them and the sport too,” said Gontán.

The event concluded with a hopeful message: FeDUA will be integrated soon into the Argentine Olympic Committee. “We will continue to work hard so University Sports can continue to grow,” the Argentinian sport leaders agreed.
