CIS Athletes at 2009 IIHF WC

Catherine Ward in actionMcGill defenseman Catherine Ward from Town of Mt. Royal, Que., and goaltender Charline Labonté of Boisbriand, Que., are among 21 players announced by Hockey Canada to play for the national women’s team at the 2009 IIHF Women’s Ice Hockey World Championship in Hameenlinna, Finland, April 4-12.

They are among six members on the squad who have played Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) ice hockey, including McGill graduate Kim St-Pierre, the goaltender from Chateauguay, Que., plus former University of Calgary star Colleen Sostorics, University of Toronto’s Jayna Hefford and Concordia University’s Caroline Ouellette. Since 1997, the CIS has produced 32 players for the senior national women’s team.

Martlets head coach Peter Smith, also a McGill grad, is part of the Team Canada coaching staff.

Canada won the inaugural Women’s Ice hockey Tournament at the 2009 Winter Universiade in Harbin, China.
