As the President of the International University Sports Federation (FISU), I am very happy to welcome you to this first edition of our new newsletter aimed specifically to the leaders, mayors and sports directors of ambitious sport cities around the globe.

This newsletter shares the best practices from previous FISU hosts, which we hope is helpful to you and serves as inspiration for your own way of hosting international sporting events. Today, we also launch a new, dedicated page on our website also aimed at sport cities worldwide with all information about our events, their benefits for our hosts and the process to follow to host them. You can visit it at http://www.fisu.net/hosting

When Taipei City put on a post-Summer Universiade event for the Chinese Taipei delegation, the fans crowded the streets in appreciation for their team

University sport events are unique in that the athletes are not only top performers on the field, but also in the classroom. University sport brings together students from all over the world who are on their way to become champions. In fact, many Universiade competitors have gone on to win Olympic medals. This list is impressing and includes amongst many others Wayne Van Niekerk (RSA, athletics), Charline Van Snick (BEL, judo) and Aliya Mustafina (RUS, artistic gymnastics).  But FISU mission goes even further: we want to ensure that the positive experience of university sports helps our student athletes to become the leaders of tomorrow.

Bringing together sport and academia, FISU events incorporate educational and cultural aspects. Hosting a university sport event is a unique opportunity to provide practical development opportunities and experiences for the host city’s students. University sport events also promote their hosts as new destinations for young people to study, visit and work, generate revenues and boost the city’s international sporting profile.  We hope that you find this new quarterly newsletter helpful. Welcome to the world of University sport!
