2009 Brazilian University Soccer Championship: Update

Some 300 university athletes, representing fourteen universities from ten states, are in Vitória, the host city of the 2009 Brazilian University Soccer Championship, which is played from September 21st to 26th.

From Monday to Wednesday (21st to 23rd), the men’s teams played the qualification round. Thirteen teams initiated the championship, but only eight went to the next round. The quarter-finals were played this Thursday (24/09).

Fighting for a spot in the semi-finals, UVV (from Espírito Santo) faced UFRJ (Rio de Janeiro) and put a  6-0 on the scoreboard. Title defender Upis (Distrito Federal) played against Mackenzie (São Paulo) and won by 1-0. Feevale (Rio Grande do Sul) passed by UESC (Bahia) with a score of 4-2. FTC (Bahia) won in penalties against Unip (São Paulo): 5-4.

This Friday (25/09), at the men’s semifinals, UVV (Espírito Santo), which plays at home, will face Upis (Distrito Federal). In the other group the match FTC (Bahia) will kick-off against Feevale (Rio Grande do Sul).

In the women’s tournament two teams played for the 2009 Brazilian University Soccer Championship: UniSant’anna (from São Paulo) and Facevv (Espírito Santo). After a best-of-three games series between the teams, São Paulo with one victory and one draw won the cup.
