31st FISU General Assembly – Day 2

FISU 29 June 2009

 

Today, June 29th, FISU held the second session of its General Assembly. After the roll call, the meeting started with a number of proposals for modifications of the FISU statutes and internal regulations by the FISU Board and by the FISU Membership.

One of the important proposals in favor of the FISU Member Associations which was put forward by the French NUSF is that FISU will cover the travel expenses of the FISU Committee members which until now where the responsibility of the NUSF. This measure will become effective for the 2011 Universiades.

The FISU Secretariat has received several requests for affiliation over the last two years. The following candidates were presented to the General Assembly:
– Europe: Bosnia & Herzegovina
– Asia: Nepal and Philippines
– Oceania: Cook Islands, Fiji Islands, Guam Island, Marianas Islands, Samoa and American Samoa.

A fifth Continental Association also applied for Associate Status within FISU, i.e. OUSA, the Oceania University Sport Association.

The new Member Associations as well as the Continental Associate Member were unanimously accepted. This amounts the number of FISU Member Associations to 153.

The activity program for the period 2009-2013 was approved as well. Besides the pending Summer Universiade in Belgrade, the 4-year program consists of the 2010 World University Championships in 29 sports, the 2010 FISU Forum in Vigo, Spain, the 2011 Universiades in Erzurum, Turkey (Winter) and Shenzhen, China (Summer), the 2012 World University Championships, the 2012 FISU Forum in Taipei City, Chinese Taipei as well as the 2013 Universiades in Maribor, Slovenia (Winter) and Kazan, Russia (Summer). After the break the attending delegates received the final report from the OC of the 2009 Winter Universiade in Harbin, China which showed a documentary video about the successful event.

Next, the floor was given to the Organizing Committees of future events, i.e. the 2011 Winter Universiade in Erzurum, the 2011 Summer Universiade in Shenzhen and the 2013 Summer Universiade. All OCs gave more info regarding their city and showed promotional films as well.

President Killian also informed the Membership about the organization ‘Peace and Sport’ with which FISU will work together.

The 32nd FISU General Assembly will take place in Shenzhen, China, prior to the 2011 Summer Universiade and will be an elective one as a new Executive Board will be elected for the period 2011-2015.
