FISU Steering Committee comes together in Kazan

FISU 15 June 2018

KAZAN – Over the past two days, the FISU Steering Committee has been in home city of 2013 Summer Universiade, to discuss the main issues of the international university sports agenda. Members also attended the second edition of the FISU Volunteer Leaders Academy, also being held in Kazan, hosting a panel discussion on the challenges of university sport.

The Committee had a packed schedule as FISU executives discussed a number of key issues regarding university sport including the implementation of the FISU Global Strategy 2027, which was approved last year in Taipei on the eve of the 2017 Summer Universiade. As it stands, action plans have been put in place in all operational areas and the first progress evaluation is scheduled to take place during the Executive Committee meeting later this year in Lausanne.

Several other new initiatives were on the agenda, including the Healthy Campus project, with the aim to encourage universities to develop on-campus sports infrastructure, and the establishment of the FISU Academic Advisory Board, a new body within the FISU structure, composed of university rectors and vice-chancellors.

FISU’s new Digital Media Strategy was also in the spotlight, ahead of the first series of tests which will be conducted during some of this year’s World University Championships. The tests will ensure that the strategy is ready to be fully operational at both the 2019 Winter and Summer Universiades, in Krasnoyarsk and Napoli respectively.

Finally, the Steering Committee reviewed the working plan for the graduates of this year’s FISU Volunteer Leaders Academy, who will be promoting FISU events in their respective countries as FISU Student Ambassadors.

Kazan provided the perfect host city for the Steering Committee, given that it is five years since the success of 2013 Universiade, which deeply transformed the region and left a rich sporting legacy. Major events have followed, including the 2015 FINA World Aquatics Championships and, of course, the 2018 FIFA World Cup this year, where Kazan is hosting six matches.
