FISU mourns Former EC Member

Hadj Sekkal Benali (1927-2015)LAUSANNE – FISU mourns the death of Mr. Hadj Sekkal Benali. Mr. Sekkal was a former Executive Committee member of FISU and currently an honorary member. Mr. Sekkal passed away on Friday, 10 April at the age of 88. He was born in 1927 in Sidi Bel Abbes.

Besides his commitment to international university sport, Mr. Sekkal also held important sport functions in his country Algeria. A former president of the Algerian Football Federation (1980/1982) he was president of the FAF during the time of the 1982 FIFA World Cup in Spain where he led the Algerian delegation.

Mr. Sekkal, was one of the pillars of the national Algerian sport movement. He was one of the founders of the Supreme Council for Sport in North Africa which launched the creation of all Unions sports federations in all disciplines, and architect of the first edition of the Maghreb University and School Games (JUSM) in 1968 in Algiers. He actively participated in the organization of the Mediterranean Games (1975) and African Games (1978).

FISU expresses its deepest condolences to the family of Mr. Sekkal.
