#IDUS2016 – Lausanne in Motion: 2nd Edition and another Success

FISU 23 September 2016

LAUSANNE – As part of the celebrations of the first ‘International Day of University Sport (#IDUS2016) FISU, in partnership with the city of Lausanne and its universities, organized the second edition of the Festival ‘Lausanne in Motion’ which celebrates the benefits of sport and physical activity.

‘Lausanne in Motion’ brought together university students and citizens of Lausanne in a friendly atmosphere. All were able to share some good times exercising and being involved in sports activities. The event, a mix of sport, culture and education, was open to all ages. It was also set up to highlight the values of FISU and university sports and to strengthen bilateral relations between the city of Lausanne, a major student city in Switzerland, and FISU.

“FISU is delighted to celebrate the first ‘International Day of University Sport’ (IDUS) via the ‘Lausanne in Motion’ event”, FISU President Oleg Matytsin commented. “Lausanne is without doubt the perfect example of a student and sports city and this event is a perfect fit with our Festival’s programme. Our gratitude goes to the canton of Vaud, the City of Lausanne, the University of Lausanne, the Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne, and all citizens of Lausanne who have become our partners and friends. Overall, we were eager to share the sport beyond the campus boundaries. ‘Lausanne in Motion’ encourages the entire city to move and to engage in sports.”

FISU 1st VP Leonz Eder

Leonz Eder, FISU 1st Vice-President: “After the success of the first edition, 2 years ago, we wanted to involve universities across the country in organizing the 2016 Festival. Thus we could count on the support of the universities of Bern, Basel, Zurich and many more. We are very proud of this success and the enthusiasm of all stakeholders.”

George André Carell, OC President and the 4 ambassadors of the Festival: Valentine De Giuli, Romain Detraz, Simona Meiler & Quentin Zeller

George-André Carrel, President of the Organising Committee: “As OC President, I can only be pleased with the success of this 2nd edition. The public has come in droves to participate in various workshops set up by our students. Collaboration with various participating universities, again, was more than successful and finally the weather was perfect, we are ready for the edition 2018!”

FISU SG/CEO Saintrond talks to the media

Eric Saintrond, FISU Secretary General/CEO: “It was very important for FISU with its HQ in Lausanne to become more involved in the life of the city and propose sports and recreational activities to the residents for the International Day of University sport. This Festival is the perfect way to thank the city for its hospitality and also a great way to promote university sports.”

Proclaimed by the UNESCO Member States, the International Day of University Sport was celebrated on 20 September or on other days around that specific date.
