EUSA visits Albania

TIRANA/LJUBLJANA – On the Invitation of the President of the Albanian Students Sports Association (ASSA) prof. dr. Fatos Gjata and the Rector of the University of Sports of Tirana prof. dr. Vejsel Rizvanolli, EUSA President Mr Adam Roczek and EUSA Secretary General Mr Matjaz Pecovnik visited Tirana from November 23-25, 2012.

During the first day of the visit, EUSA representatives first met on separate meetings with Mr Aldo Bumci, Minister of Tourism, Culture, Youth and Sports and Dr. Myqerem Tafaj, Minister of Education and Science. The main topics of the meetings were activities and future development of university sport in Albania.

EUSA Representatives presented the organisation of university sports in Europe as well as the EUSA projects to Minister Bumci, while the Rector presented the data on the National University Games – Albanian Universiade, closing with finals the following day. In his speech Mr Bumci expressed full readiness of the ministry to further support the activities on the field of the university sports and stressed that the ministry would fully support the organisation of one of the European Universities Championships in Albania in the near future.

At the meeting with the Ministry of Education and Science, Mr Roczek presented the EUSA activities also to the Minister of Education and Science Mr Tafaj. On this occasion EUSA President presented to Mr Tafaj the anniversary EUSA Book. Mr Tafaj thanked EUSA representatives for visiting Albania and the support given on this occasion, and assured full cooperation of the Ministry with the ASSA and University of Sports of Tirana to further develop the university sports in the country.

In the afternoon, the EUSA representatives were invited to the University of Sports of Tirana, where the Rector Prof. Dr. Rizvanolli presented the structure and activities of the university, which plays the main role on the field of student sports. The Rector thanked the EUSA for the visit and presented Mr Roczek and Mr Pecovnik special plaques.

Mr Roczek thanked Mr Rizvanolli and Mr Gjata for the invitation and expressed his hope for further collaboration also in the future. Afterwards, the Rector showed the new sport facilities that were recently built and are hosting the finals of the Albanian Universiade.

Albanian Universiade

On the occasion of the first century of Albanian’s independence, the final phase of the Albanian Sports Universiade was organized from November 23rd to 25th. 20 public and private universities participated in this important national sports event. During the month of November students from public and private universities competed in different sports disciplines (Men & Women), i.e. basketball,volleyball, football, tennis, table tennis and chess. The matches in groups were organized in the cities of Tirana, Prishtina, Shkodra, Korca and Elbasan. The activity was finalized with the basketball match between the men’s teams of the universities of Prishtina and the Tirana Sport University, which was won by the students of Prishtina. At the end of the Universiade the students of the Tirana Sports University ranked first.
