Historical Team Sport Participation for Uganda

 

 

Gwangju – Uganda has been participating in the Universiade since 1973. To date, athletes from Uganda have won various medals for outstanding performances. For the first time in the history of the Universiade, Uganda brings a female basketball team to compete in the women’s tournament. The delegation of Uganda for the 28th Summer Universiade, comprises of 42 athletes 18 officials.

Penninah Kabenge, the Vice-Chair of the FISU Gender Equality Committee and President of the National University Federation of Uganda exclaimed she was happy that her country has stepped ahead and taken part in the team events. “The girls already competed in the African tournament but here the challenges are big and we need to face them. I am confident that the athletes will perform well”, she commented. “We did not come for medals, we brought or girls for exposure”, Paul Kayongo, the Head of Delegation added. In the near future Uganda is going to be a focus to reckon with considering the fact it has one of the biggest delegations participating in sports events.

Julius Lukwago, Administrator of University Sports Uganda, who also happen to be the ex-national badminton from Yale High School stated that “we expect to register a good performance, we expect to register a good Universiade result as an African country.”

Stacey Lubowa Alituwera, a 20-year old athlete and captain of the basketball team and Uganda’s flag bearer from Makerere University said that her team has proved itself in the African Tournament and will continue to progress and flourish in the upcoming years.
