FISU America crowns 3x3 League continental qualifers

 

SANTA TECLA, EL SALVADOR, -- At the Pan-American 3×3 basketball tournament winning teams settled it our on the court for the right to represent the Americas at thee FISU World University League – 2018 Finals this November in Xiamen, China.

 

It was the University of Chile that was crowned the women’s team champion, after the Chilean quartet defeated the National University of Colombia in the final by a score of 12-8. Third place went to the Technical and Higher Educational Center of Mexico, which had lost by only one point to the Colombian team in the semifinal, and then went on to defeat the Polytechnic Territorial University of Lara Andrés Eloy Blanco (Venezuela) in the 3rd place game 22-11.

 

In the men’s tournament side, it was the Center of University Studies of Mexico, which imposed its aggressive style of hoops on the University of Costa Rica en route to a 22-16. In the third place game the National University of La Matanza won a hard-fought game against University of Carabobo, winning 21-19.

 

In the individual performance challenges it was Damaris Cota of Mexico taking home the women’s 3-point tournament as her country mate Bryan Rivera took home the men’s long distance sharp shooting title. In skills competition, Maria Quero from Venezuela won for the women as Mexico’s Luis Castro won for the men.

 

América Alvarado, FISU America representative in the tournament noted the impressive growth of the 3x3 game throughout the North and South American continents in recent years, which has translated especially to the streets and courts across the university landscape.

 

“There has been a great level and excellent players have been seen, which makes us feel proud to see that universities produce athletes who can not only play at the Pan American level but also worlswide,” Mr. Alvarada said. “As for the organization, it has been a great effort of the Salvadoran University Sports Association, with the backing of the Mayor of Santa Tecla and FISU America, and a positive balance can be made. The accommodation has been welcoming, the food always arrived on time, and the call was finally greater than expected, but in the same way all the delegations were comfortable and supported. The effort has been worthwhile and as FISU America we are happy to know that the countries accompany our process and that the games were of quality.”
