3X3 FISU Finals: Heavyweights and wildcards in contention for spot in final

15 September 2017

Day 2 saw a successful close to the preliminary pool play. Tomorrow’s programme is stacked with games to decide the rankings for the Last 16 in the men’s and women’s tournament — and a time for individuals to shine in the shootout and slam dunk contests

XIAMEN — After two days of intense play, the 3×3 FISU World University League preliminary pool play came to close Friday night.

From top to bottom, most games were hard fought and didn’t necessarily follow previous world rankings or palmares. Case in point: while defending champion McGill University moves on to the knockout stages undefeated it took a gritty 19-18 win in their first game over Taylor’s University to do it.

On the women’s side, last year’s winners Lithuania Sports University had to grind out two wins by two points a piece after falling 9-17 to the University of Physical Education (HUN).

Chinese Culture University (TPE) — another consistent contender on the women’s side, who finished second in the tournament last year — won all three of their games, and looked good doing it.

Yang Qing of the Chinese Culture University team said that they were satisfied with today’s performances, but that they would have to adjust themselves to the kinds of circumferences in the following games if they want to really fight for the title.

While the Saturday’s schedule consists of  a bevy of games to decide the final rankings for the Last 16 in the men’s and women’s tournament, its also the day for individual performances to be rewarded. While the men can compete in the crowd-pleasing slam dunk contest, don’t be surprised if some sharp-shooting from the ladies in the shoot out steals the show.

On Sunday, the action turns to the crowning of the kings and queens of 3×3 university team competition with Quarter Finals, Semi-Finals and Finals all taking place. For the teams to make the finals, its both a sprint and a marathon to hoisting the winner’s trophy.
