TOKYO – The Gold Medal Game will be played between Cuba and USA. This was decided today after the 7th day of competitions at the 5th World University Baseball Championship in Tokyo, Japan
USA vs. Japan: 4-2
Japan was the first to score in the top of the first inning by Ishimine who was walked and then scored on a passed ball. In the bottom of the first inning, however, Springer smashed a come-from-behind bases-loaded dinger. Japan added a run in the 2nd inning by Matsumoto who hit double and scored on a grounder. Then, both teams remained scoreless with pitchers Gray and Ramirez for USA verses Saito, Inui and Oishi for Japan, ending the game with USA’s victory.
Chinese Taipei vs. Sri Lanka: 21-0 (called in 5th inning)
Chinese Taipei scored 6 runs by 6 safe hits including two run homers by Huan Yi Kun in the 1st inning and added 2 runs in the 2nd inning. Chinese Taipei scored 8 runs in a sweep in the 3rd inning including Huan Yi Kun’s successive homerun of 3 runs. The 5th inning saw another 5 runs for Chinese Taipei by 4 hitting streaks, culminating to 21 runs till the 4th inning with 19 safe hits. Sri Lanka remained scoreless with 1 safe hit and the game was called in the 5th inning.
Cuba vs. Korea: 11-1 (called in 8th inning)
Cuba scored 2 runs in the 2nd inning including a solo homerun of Abreu and added a run in the 4th inning. Abreu smashed another homerun in the 5th, this time bases loaded and Despaigne hit 2 run homers leaving Korea far behind. Korea scored a run in the 7th by a timely safe hit of Yoon Yeo Woon from Cuba’s starting pitcher Pedroso. Cuba led the scores by 10 runs with Despaigne’s scoring a safe hit in the 8th inning and called the game.
