10th WUC Archery – Opening Ceremony

LEGNICA – The long awaited 10th World University Archery Championship has begun. Yesterday, 2 July, the Opening Ceremony took place in Legnica’s city centre. It was connected with the inauguration of the 17th International Folk Festival. Student-athletes from 32 countries were marching on the main city street in order to finally reach the scene situated next to the town hall.

During the Opening Ceremony Józef Basciuk, President of the Organizing Committee; Chen-Tai Cheng, FISU Executive Committee member and Tadeusz Krzakowski, Mayor of Legnica addressed the audience.

Mr. Józef Baściuk praised the idea of a noble athletic competition, Mr. Chen-Tai Cheng added that he was really impressed by Legnica’s architecture and the level of sport facilities. The host city’s Mayor remembered his last words said three years ago (when Legnica hosted the World Archery Youth Championship), when he didn’t say goodbye, but just ‘See you again in Legnica’. Mr. Tadeusz Krzakowski officially opened the FISU event.  The Ceremony saw the hoisting of the Polish national flag and the FISU flag while the national anthem of Poland and anthem of FISU “Gaudeamus igitur”, was sung by a choir.

Yesterday, the competitors had a last possibility to check their bows, before competitions start today, 3 July. The competition will be broadcasted on Archery TV via the internet.
