Brighton Declaration on Women and Sport

The Brighton Declaration on Women and Sport is a legacy of the first World Conference on Women and Sport organised in 1994 in Brighton, United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. It is addressed to all those governments, public authorities, organisations, businesses, educational and research establishments, women’s organisations and individuals who are responsible for, or who directly or indirectly influence, the conduct, development or promotion of sport or who are in any way involved in the employment, education, management, training, development or care of women in sport. This Declaration is meant to complement all sporting, local, national and international charters, laws, codes, rules and regulations relating to women or sport.

To date, 439 organisations have endorsed the Brighton Declaration on Women and Sport, and FISU is one of them.

On 14 June 2014 the participants of the 6th IWG World Conference on Women and Sport unanimously adopted the updated Brighton Plus Helsinki 2014 Declaration on Women and Sport as part of the conference legacy document Helsinki calls the world of sport to “Lead the Change, Be the Change”. The legacy document also includes the second annex Conclusions and Recommendations of the 6th IWG World Conference on Women and Sport “Lead the Change, Be the Change”.

IWG Conference on Women and Sport

The IWG World Conferences on Women and Sport are milestone events, which every four years focus global attention on specific goals and action steps aimed at offering men and women equal opportunities in the sport arena.

FISU was a partner of the 6th IWG World Conference on Women and Sport, which took place in June 2014 in Helsinki, Finland. On this occasion, FISU ran a parallel session, the title of which was "University Sport: A constant quest for quality", showing another side of its structure and presenting its actions to advance the issue of gender equality in university sport.
