On Dec. 22nd, the Asian University Sports Federation (AUSF) Steering Committee Meeting was successfully held in Beijing, which was another productive and constructive meeting after the AUSF General Assembly held in Shenzhen this July. The main theme of this meeting was to find approaches to make AUSF more professional, effective and continental after being recognized as a FISU continental organization, to finalize the host unit and participating unit of AUSF championships and to promote the marketing and fund-raising industry of AUSF. In the morning session, President ZHANG Xinsheng, together with Dr.Omar Al Hai, Vice-President and Mr. Kenny Chow, Secretary-General, shared with the Steering Committee members the spirits of FISU’s regulations on continental organizations and critical elements of the FISU Challenge 21 Strategy and Mr. YAN Guohua, Vice Secretary-General made a presentation on EUSA’s valuable experience on championship organization. In the afternoon session, the AUSF calendar was finally formalized. Six sport events - basketball, football, volleyball, badminton, tennis, table tennis - were selected as core sports (annual championships) to build up the brand name of AUSF Championships, which will be hosted consecutively for 3 years and another 11 sport events like baseball, handball, canoeing, dragon boat racing, woodball, etc. will be held optionally. By learning from the European University Sports Association (EUSA), AUSF will take some team events to test the water based on the principle that university should be the host unit and participating unit of AUSF championships. In other words, teams will be representing their university instead of their countries. Meanwhile, in line with FISU’s regulations on continental organizations, 3 sub-committees were set up, including AUSF Championships and Games Supervision Committee, AUSF Public Relation Committee and AUSF Sport Research and Development Committee.
