October 30th, 2008

The Organisers of the 26th Universiade in Shenzhen took the opportunity to present their new Universiade logo: the "Happy U"at the FISU Executive Committee meeting that was held in Brussels from 26th to 28th of October. This logo was chosen by an evaluation Committee after studying the 2,000 proposed logos they had received from 10,000 participants at their "logo contest". So finally they decided to choose the "Happy U". As you can see on the image above, the logo consists of colour dots of different sizes, each serving as a composing element. Arousing various imaginations, the logo is completely open for free association instead of prescriptive meaning.

Interpretation of Openness

"U" can stand for "University", "You", "Union" and "Universe"; "U" can also be comprehended as harbours and bays in Shenzhen such as Dapeng Bay where college students from all over the world get together. The shape of 'U" resembling a half ring and a cup, symbolizes both acceptance and openness. These dots can be freely zoomed in or out, concentrated and trimmed. They can also evolve into different objects in form of various concrete graphics, which can be applied at various occasions during the Universiade and bear multiple meanings.

Interpretation of Multi-element

These dots evolve into different objects in form of various concrete graphics, bearing multiple meanings. Six categories of explanations are summarized which are significant to the publicity and promotion of our Universiade. Moreover, in terms of literary composition, it serves as the title of six paragraphs: the Happy "U", the Open "U", the Tolerant "U", the Youthful "U", the Universal "U" and the Future "U". Red, green, yellow, blue and black are the basic colours of the "Happy U".
