2008 WUC Orienteering: Update

The XVIth World University Orienteering Championship 2008 is being held in Tartu, Estonia. Tartu is an old university town, the University of Tartu was founded in 1632. More than 270 best students from all over the world are expected to take part in the WUOC 2008, including the 2008 Orienteering World Champion Dana Brožkova. “The World University Orienteering Championship is certainly one of the sporting highlights of this Summer in Tartu. I am happy that the city of Tartu and the whole South of Estonia are showing themselves again on the international top orienteering scene – only two years ago the European Orienteering Championships were held here” said the mayor of Tartu Mr. Urmas Kruuse who is also member of the WUOC 2008 Council. Yesterday, July 28th, by 6PM already nineteen teams had received accreditation for the Championship. Many athletes had a chance to go for a light jog. The weather was sunny, but some light showers and occasional tunderstorms are forecasted for today. The opening ceremony of the Championships will be held on Tartu Town Hall Square at 3 p.m. (CET) today. Four competitions will be held between July 30th and August 2nd: a sprint in Tartu, long distance in Veskimõisa, short distance and a relay in Prangli. The Championships are organised by the Estonian Academic Sports Federation, OC Põlva Kobras and Estonian Orienteering Federation.
