2008 WUC Boxing: Update

From November 21st to 24th, Laurent Briel, Director of Championships and Sinisa Jasnic, FISU CTI Chair for the Championships travelled to Kazan, Tatarstan Republic, Russia, the host city of the 2008 World University Boxing Championship for an inspection visit to report on the preparation progress of the Championship. The WUC Boxing is one of the most popular WUC in the FISU program. Mr. Briel was received at the airport by Marat Bariev, Minister of the Ministry on Affairs of Youth, Sport and Tourism of the Republic of Tatarstan; Oleg Matytsin, President of the Russian Student Sports Union and FISU Assessor and Shaikhytdinov Khalil, Deputy Minister of the Ministry on Affairs of Youth, Sport and Tourism of the Republic of Tatarstan. The inspection visit started with the different hotels that will be used to lodge the participants of the WUC. The hotel of the athletes and referees is situated at walking distance (300m) of the competition venue in the centre of the city. All meals will be served in the hotels.

The competition venue

The airport is situated only 30 minutes from the city centre and the different hospitals that will be used for the WUC are within 7 minutes from the WUC venue. The WUC Boxing will be staged in the city’s brand new basketball arena which boasts a seating capacity of 6,000 and all the comfort of a modern day sports temple. It’s a fantastic infrastructure made available to the Organisers of this FISU event which permits them to focus on the practice of their sport. Besides the competition arena, all the necessary installations for the administrative work of the WUC are present as well: press room, referees quarters, technical room, meeting rooms, etc. During a work session with the Organising Committee, the OC members presented their progress reports and all items related to the event were reviewed.

On November 23rd, the FISU delegates were invited to lunch by the Prime Minister of the Tatarstan Republic, Mr. Rustam N. Minnikhanov, where they gave a progress report on the evolution of the preparations. The PM confirmed the full support of his government to make this event a successful one. Mr. Sinisa Jasnic, Chair of the CTI championships also stressed the importance for the organisers to respect the calendar deadlines. The FISU delegates also discussed the problems relating to visa procedures for the participants with the PM. We would like to underline the importance of the attendance of the Russian University Sports Union in the person of its president Oleg Matytsin.
