2008 WUC Squash: Day 7
August 28th, 2008
Last day of the 6th World University Squash Championship was held in the name of the final ranking games. Teams of USA and Australia played for the 7th place. Both teams were very concentrated, especially the ‘kangaroos’, organizers of the next WUC Squash in 2010 wanted to finish as high as possible in the ranking. Australian Nathan Turnbull, the tallest men of this tournament, won against Lee Rosen 3-1. The second game was played between Rex Hendricks and John Fulham. Fulham went 2-0 games up but Hendricks started to play much better and won 3-2. He saved the 7th place for the Aussies. Last match in this round was played between Melody Francis and Kirsten Lange to best of three games. Lange, higher ranked at the Individual event won 2-1.
For the 5th place AUT met SUI. Aqeel Rehmann won his game against Benjamin Fischer 3-1. The second match was played between Jakob Dirnberger and Yvain Baden. The Swiss Yvain went 2-1 games up and had a match ball in the fourth but then hit a row of unforced errors, which brought Jakob back to 2-2. In the fifth Yvain had nothing left and Jakob swept through to win 3-2 and secure the 5th place for his team. The women match between Birgit Coufal and Gaby Schmohl was played just to best of three games. The final result of this game was not that important and maybe that was the point why Coufal lost 1-2 to Schmohl.
Momen vs. Hinds
The game for the 3rd place started at 11am. The match between Nafiizwan Adnan and Colin West was very exciting. Both players played long ends and at the end that was maybe the fact why Nafiizwan looked less tired and he got the first match for him 3-1 with games 11-8, 8-11, 11- and 12-10. The second match between Adnan Nafzahizam and Frederick Reid was played on five games. Nafzahizam won 3-2 after very equal match and assured for the Malaysian Team bronze medal. The women’s game was not played after the agreement of both teams. The 6th World University Squash Championship final was televised live. Ramy Ahour played very smart against Alan Clyne. After 25 minutes Ashour won 11-8, 11-8 and 11-2. The second match between Joel Hinds and Tarek Momen was played also only three games but the last game was almost stolen by Hinds. Final score was 12-10, 11-4 and 13-11. The Egyptians lead 2-0 for the matches and there was no importance for women to play. Egypt was crown the new World University Squash Champion in the team event.
