2008 WUC Weightlifting: Day 1
November 26th, 2008
Pr. Konstantinos Simopoulos, Rector of the Democritus University of Thrace & President of the OC
Yesterday, November 25th, the first competitions of the 2008 WUC Weightlifting were launched. From the beginning onwards it was clear that the level of athletes is pretty high and the competition could have some interesting developments on the medal podium.
It is clear that the excellent working relationship with the International Weightlifting Federation pays off as together with its Greek member the IWF has put in a lot of efforts to make sure the WUC progresses under the best circumstances for the athletes.
The campus of the Democritus University is now completely ‘wrapped up’ in the colours of the WUC and the majority of the volunteers are students from the Physical Education faculty as well as a number of exchange students from the Erasmus project.
Mr. Douvis Stavros, State Secretary for Sport and member of the FISU EC
At the end of the first competition day the participants were treated with an unforgettable Opening Ceremony. At the ceremony, Pr. Konstantinos Simopoulos, Rector of the Democritus University of Thrace and President of the Organising Committee welcomed the athletes and thanked the volunteers for their work. Mr. Sinisa Jasnic, FISU Assessor and CISCA Chair thanked the authorities for their support, in particular the IWF and the Hellenic Committee for University Sport. He then invited Mr. Douvis Stavros, State Secretary for Sport and member of the FISU Executive Committee to open the 1st World University Weightlifting Championship. The protocol was followed by an original cultural performance.
