Who would be thinking of summer, sun and Beach Volleyball during these present winter days? In fact, those nations sending teams to the World University Championship (WUC) 2008 in Hamburg are already planning in full speed. The completed General Entry procedure has come up with a record breaking result of 31 countries promising to take part in the 2008 WUC Beach Volleyball. Among them are the leading Beach Volleyball nations Brazil, China and the USA. In addition to these top ranked teams the winning nations from the 2006 Championships in Cyprus will attend: France, Switzerland and Germany. Germany as the host country will probably line up 3 male and 3 female duos, while the other nations will be able to send 4 teams in total. The ADH Technical Director for Beach Volleyball, former Olympian Jörg Ahmann, who also coaches the most promising national talents for the German Volleyball Association, will select the best student-athletes from the German Junior National Team. It is his goal to tie in with the success from the last WUC Beach Volleyball two years ago.
But the WUC is not only about sportive laurels: ADH and the City of Hamburg, which will also be a bidding city for the 2015 Summer Universiade, want to use the opportunity to present themselves to the international sports audience, to the participating nations and to FISU as an experienced organizer for high quality sport events. Jörg Förster who is responsible for the organization of the WUC Beach Volleyball explains: 'With a state of the art sport venue close to the former ferry terminal of the England ferry we have been able to find a location which conveys the special flair of the seaport Hamburg to the international world of sports. Cruisers, containers, port atmosphere and an innovative architecture close by, provide the framework for the first World Student Championships in Hamburg.' In addition to the outstanding location with a stadium including a total of ten courts the current registrations promise a very high level of competition. 'I am sure that we will organize unforgettable beach-days in Hamburg for national and international guests. At the same time we want to present ourselves positively for the bidding period of the 2015 Summer Universiade', Förster defines the general goal of the Organizing Committee. The next deadline for the WUC Beachvolleyball will come up on April 2nd, 2008 when the Quantitative Entry has to be completed. By that time it will be clear, how many teams the participating nations will send. Maximum capacity will be 32 male and 32 female teams.
