2008 WUC Weightlifting: Update

Yesterday, November 24th, the majority of the WUC participants arrived at Komotini, Greece, the host city of the inaugural edition of the World University Weightlifting Championship. The event is organised by the Greek University Sports Federation in close collaboration with the Democritus University of Thrace.

FISU CIC member Alan Sharp had his hands full at the accreditation as this first edition is already a success in terms of participation. Some 200 participants from 36 countries entered the championship. During the day the technical meeting took place which was conducted by Mrs. Aniko Nemeth-Mora, the newly appointed FISU Technical Chair for Weightlifting. At the same meeting, Mr. Attila Adamfi, Competition Director of the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) gave an overview of the technical matters linked to this event.

Later that day, the General Technical Meeting took place on campus, in the main building of the Physical Education Faculty of the Democritus University. Mrs Nemeth-Mora introduced the CISCA members to the team representatives and Mr. Tokmakidis Savvas, Vice-Rector of the University and President of the Organising Committee thanked the delegations for participating so numerously, being proud that his university would host the inaugural event of this World University Championship. Mr. Sinisa Jasnic, FISU Assessor and CISCA Chair stressed the good working relationship between FISU and the IWF which is the foundation of the success of this championship. He also thanked the Greek NUSF and Mr. Michalis Kiritsis its President for its constant development of University Sport. This is the second WUC the Greek NUSF stages this year. In July the NUSF hosted the 8th WUC Wrestling in Thessaloniki.
