FISU At AIPS Congress, Day 2
May 25th, 2008
As always events like Sport Accord and the AIPS Congress are very important platforms for FISU to present its activities and to network with a lot of leaders in different fields of sports, such as members of Organising Committees, Editors, Journalists, Sponsors and Representa-tives from International Sport Federations. In Beijing FISU Assessor Leonz Eder had the opportunity to present the activities of FISU to the 360 delegates, observers and guests. He also used his stay at the Congress to promote the Universiades, the World University Championships and the Educational activities in many individual meetings and discussions with Members of the IOC, with Journalists from many countries and with representatives from Organising Committees such as Vancouver 2012 Olympic Games, Asian 2011 Winter Games 2010 in Almaty, Kazakhstan and the representa-tives of the previous Asian Games in Doha, Qatar. Mr Al Malki, who was awarded for the best Press Facilities in the Year 2007, wanted to get more information about Universiade in order to verify Doha's interest for hosting a Summer Universiade in the future. Also the representatives of Belgrade and Shenzhen used their stay in Beijing for contacting as many journalists as possible. This networking should increase the interest of the Media for the Universiade 2009 and 2011. It was agreed to continue to be present at the next AIPS Con-gresses in Milano and Antalya. This year FISU signed a new contract with AIPS, its President Gianni Merlo is member of the FISU Press Commission. Leonz Eder proposed to the AIPS Executive Board to create a new AIPS Commission of University Sport. Marketing and Communication will also be a topics of the upcoming FISU Forum to be held in Krakow where Jerzy Jakobsche, President of UEPS, probably will be present. FISU President George Killian and AIPS President Gianni Merlo agreed during their meet-ings in Bangkok at the Universiade, to create a kind of scholarship for young sport journal-ists. This idea was discussed also during the CIP meeting in Brussels, and at the AIPS Con-gress, Mr Merlo and Tamara Kostro presented the aim to host a seminar for 50 young sport journalists during the Universiade in Belgrade 2009. In fact 50 years after the first Univer-siade this is a very good chance to launch such an educational program helping young jour-nalists to practise at a top sporting event and also to promote the Universiade in 50 countries. The Congress also included a visit at the National Stadium "Bird's Nest" with a seating ca-pacity of 91'000, where the China Athletics Open was held, an inspection of the Media facili-ties and the Olympic Green as well as a performance at the National Grand Theatre and an excursion to the Great Wall. FISU Assessor Leonz Eder meanwhile used the chance to visit the Headquarters of the Federation of University Sports of China (FUSC), where he had meetings with Yan Guohua, Vice Secretary General and Shen Zhen, Member of CIC of FISU.
