MA News: The Chinese Taipei Women Soccer Team Get Set to Start Training for the 2007 SU
June 22nd, 2007
30 collegiate women soccer players were invited to tryout for the team that will represent Chinese Taipei in the soccer competitions at the 2007 Summer Universiade in Bangkok this summer. Most of the players invited come from two universities, National Taiwan College of Physical Education, last year’s UFA (University Football Association) champion, and National Taiwan Normal University, this year’s UFA champion. Among the 30 women on the squad, 18 are already members of the national team that will be competing at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. One of them is forward Lin Yu Hui, who won the Golden Boot Award during the Olympic qualifiers for scoring the most goals during the tournament. She is no stranger to this award, as she has won the Golden Boot Award for the past three seasons in the UFA. Another star to catch on the Chinese Taipei team will be freshman Hsieh Yi Lin, who played exceptionally well at last year’s Doha Asian Games. The Chinese Taipei women’s football team will be coached by Coach Lu Kwei Hua, who is making an appearance for the third time. She helmed the head coach position previously in 2003 at the Daegu Universiade and in 2005 at the Izmir Universiade. Both times she led the Chinese Taipei team to impressive records, finishing fourth and eight, respectively. She will be assisted by Coach Yun and Coach Chen, to help her with getting the players ready for another run towards the gold medal. This year, the Chinese Taipei women face some tough competition in their preliminary round. They are placed in the same bracket as Brazil, New Zealand, and Russia. Brazil will be tough, as they were last Universiade’s champion. New Zealand will also test Chinese Taipei, given two years ago they beat Chinese Taipei by two goals. No matter, the Chinese Taipei women have set their eyes on making it to the final four, which was previously achieved twice in 1993 and 2003. Training camp for the women’s football team starts in July. By the end of the training, the roster of 30 players will be narrowed down to 20.
