Address by Cheng Youdong, Vice-Governor of the Province
The ceremony to celebrate the third anniversary of the successful bid to host the 2009 Winter Universiade and announcement of its slogan was solemnly held in the Maoershan Skiing Ground of the Harbin Institute of Physical Education in the morning of January 10th. The member of the Standing Committee of the Provincial Party Committee and Executive Vice-Governor of Heilongjiang Du Jiahao, the Vice-Chairman of Heilongjiang People’s Congress Zhang Chengyi and Li Ximing, the Vice-Governor of Heilongjiang and Executive Vice-Chairman of the Organizing Committee of the Winter Universiade Cheng Youdong, and the Vice-Chairman of the Provincial Political Consultative Conference Chen Shutao and He Xiaoping attended the announcement ceremony. George Killian, President of FISU, sent a letter of congratulations to the Organizing Committee of the 2009 Winter Universiade. A big air-inflated archway stood by the ceremony spot in the Maoershan Skiing Ground, responding to the snow sculpture of the mascot. At the celebration conference, the slogan of “Youth, Future, Ice and Snow” for the 24th Winter Universiade to be held in Harbin in 2009 was first announced accompanied by music and 2009 balloons in different colours.
'Ice and Snow', the main feature of the winter sports meet, is an important medium to combine world university student athletes in ice and snow events. It is also the distinctive geographic feature and cultural background of Harbin, known as the Ice City, the place for the Winter Universiade for perfect fusion of ice and snow culture and sports. Youth, the symbol of vigour, emotion, dream, and hope, means the Winter Universiade is a grand sport event for the world youth and indicates Harbin is a modern city full of vigour and hope. Future, Youth represents the future of the world and is the main body for building a peaceful and beautiful future world. It also shows the host city’s concept to face the world, face the future, and devote for the world harmony, peace, and development. Announcement of the slogan indicated that the preparatory work for the Winter Universiade had entered a brand-new stage. (OC 2009 WU)
