2008 WUC White Water Canoeing: Update

105 male and 30 female athletes, including at least one senior world champion, participating from 17 countries were accredited at the 6th World University White Water Canoeing Championship which takes place in Cunova, Slovakia from september 17th to 21st.

On September 17th, the General Technical Meeting took place in the Hotel where the athletes are lodged (Hotel Dom Sportu). All the heads of delegation were informed about the technical rules and the programmee by Mr. Jifi KRATOCHVIL, Mrs. Milica ZEREROVA and Mr. Jan DAJCAN. On September 18th, at 18 pm the Opening Ceremony for the 6th WUC White Water Canoeing took place in the city park in Bratavislava. Mr.Anton ZNASIK, President of the OC and Slovak University Federation welcomed the participants to Bratislava.

Opening Ceremony

After the speech by Dr.Thomas CRISP on behalf of FISU President and the FISU anthem, the FISU flag was raised, and the athletes and refeeres made their oath declaration. Mr.Pavol MACKO, Director General of the Sports Section of the Ministry of Education, then officilally opened the 2008 WUC White Water Canoeing. The training started in dry weather but as the competition started so did the rain, and the temperature dropped. The course is of a high standard, as good as anything the athletes have experienced before and in the first training there were a few capsizes. Everyone enjoyed the competition and the exceptional facilities. After the initial qualification 3 Slovaks were in the lead in the mens K1 competition, while Czech and Great Britain were leading the mens sprint event.
