FISU President Receives USSA Award

On January 18th, The United States Sports Academy honoured FISU President George E. Killian with its Eagle Award. The Eagle Award, the Academy's highest international honour in the Awards of Sport Medallion Series, is presented to a world leader in sports in recognition of that individual's contributions in promoting international harmony, peace and goodwill through the effective use of sports. The recipient of this award must have tempered strength with keen judgment in using authority wisely as a means of bringing nations together through sports for the betterment of mankind. President Killian has received nearly 50 international awards and honours and seven Honorary Doctorates from institutions in six countries. To briefly highlight the extensive list of Killian’s awards, he has received the IOC Olympic Order in 1996, two Commendations for the US Olympic Committee, the Olympic Torch for outstanding contributions to international sports, the Order of the Star from the Lithuanian NOC, the FIBA Order of Merit and the John W. Burn Award from the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.

Previous Recipients
The Eagle Award has been presented annually since 1986 as part of the Academy’s Awards of Sport Medallion Series which pays “Tribute to the Artist and the Athlete.” Past recipients include Paul Tagliabue, Ted Turner, Arnold Schwarzenegger and HSH Prince Albert of Monaco. Also William Hybl, Chair of the FISU Legal Committee received the award in 2001.
