2008 WUC Boxing: Day 1

Kazan, host city of the 2013 Summer Universiade, is about to host the first FISU boxing event in its history. The 3rd World University Boxing Championship will take place in the capital of Tatarstan for the period September, 19 – 27. 137 boxers representing 20 countries will compete for the victory in 11 weight categories. Specially for this occasion, “Basket-hall”, the venue to stage the 3rd World University Boxing Championship, acquired a new boxing ring (8mx8m).
With the Olympic Games Beijing 2008 just finished, many strong boxing countries are in Kazan: Azerbaijan, Belarus, Costa-Rica, Czech Republic, Finland, Italy, Kazakhstan, Kirgizstan, Lithuania, Moldova, Mongolia, Russia, Serbia, South Africa, Turkey, Ukraine, more than 20 countries will participate in the event.
The representatives for this WUC are: FISU EC member Jasnic Sinisa (Serbia), AIBA delegate Prof. Aghajan Abiyev (Azerbaijan), FISU Technical Chair for Boxing Mr. Abdulmanov Eduard (Russia), FISU CIC delegate Dr. Jargalsaikhan Dorjsuren (Mongolia), FISU CM delegate Dr. Katzmaier Peter (Germany) and FISU Director of WUC Mr. Laurent Briel (Belgium). The OC received the support from the government and international and local sport organizations: Mr. George E.Killian, President of FISU; Vitaly Mutko, Minister of sport, tourism and youth policy of the Russian Federation; Mr. Minnikhanov, Prime Minister of the Republic Tatarstan and President OC; Ching-Kuo Wu, OIC Member and President AIBA; Vyacheslav Fetisov, Chairman of the Russian Federal Agency for physical cultural and sport; Oleg Matysin, FISU Assessor and President of the Russian NUSF; Eugeny Murov, President of the Russian Boxing Federation; Ilsyr Metshin, Mayor of Kazan and Marat Bariev, Minister on affairs youth, sport and tourism of the Republic Tatarstan.
The city is ready to hold the 3rd World University Boxing Championship. The airport and the railway station work according to schedule; the sport halls, hotels and different culture units work very well, together with some 100 volunteers. The city Kazan has a good sports tradition and excellent sports infrastructure. This championship is a good experience for its preparation for the 27th Summer Universiade in 2013.
