Member Association News: Chinese Taipei Announces Tennis Team for Bangkok
July 20th, 2007
Chinese Taipei has chosen four men and four women to compete at the 2007 Bangkok Universiade in the tennis event. Six players were chosen based on the latest national ranking by the Chinese Taipei Tennis Association and international ranking by ITF. The last two players were chosen for their compatibility to pair up with other players for doubles and mix double matches. Tennis has always been one of the strongest events for Chinese Taipei. Since 1995, at the Fukuoka Universiade, Chinese Taipei has won 9 gold, 5 silver, and 7 bronze medals in tennis. With only Yuan-Jan Chan competing in the Universiade for the first time, all the other women’s players from Chinese Taipei are time-tested veterans of the Universiade. Chia-Jung Chuang, in Daegu and Izmir, won gold and silver medals in women’s doubles as well as mixed doubles competitions. Su-Wei Hsieh who recently had a good showing at the Wimbledon, and Chin-Wei Chan both have each won a gold in women’s double and a bronze in women’s single. Although Yuan-Jan Chan is a first timer, she and her partner Chia-Jung Chuang are the favorite to win the women’s double event. Earlier this year at the Australian Open, they placed second in the women’s double competition, achieving the best result for players from Chinese Taipei in international competition. The Chinese Taipei men are not shabby either. Ti Chen, Chu-Huan Yi, and Lee Hsin-Han represented Chinese Taipei at the 2006 Doha Asian Games. At the Doha Asian Games, Ti Chen and Chu-Huan Yi won bronze in tennis team event. At the Izmir Universiade, Chen Ti and Chuang Chia-Jung won mixed double gold. Competing at the Universiade for the first time is Liu Tai-Wei who won gold in men’s single and silver in mixed double at last year’s 1st Asian University Tennis Championship in Guangzhou, China.
