MA News: Azerbaijan Stages 8th National Universiade

Every two years, prior to the Universiade, FISU Member Association Azerbaijan stages its National Universiade the so-called ‘Republic Universiade’. This year’s event is the 8th edition of these Games which are being organised from March to May in seven sports: Judo, Basketball, Chess, Volleyball, Swimming, Badminton and Athletics. About 1,500 students of 25 Universities take part in this event. On April 13th, 2007 the Opening Ceremony of the Republic Universiade took place in one of the best sports facility of the capital where the FISU flag was hoisted up and the FISU official hymn was performed.
Chairman of the Trade Union of Azerbaijan, Deputy Minister of Youth and Sport and the President of the Youth organization made speeches in this ceremony. This Ceremony also had a cultural part with the participation of well-known sportsmen and artists. There were 25,000 spectators-students in this Ceremony. This event was shown on all national TV channels. It was an important event in sport life of Azerbaijan.
At this time the Republic Universiade is continuing and the student-athletes with the best results will take part in the 24th Universiade 2007 in Bangkok, Thailand.
