2007 Summer Universiade Bangkok: Charouck Confident Venues Will Be Ready In Time

Maj Gen Charouck Arirachakaran, Technical Committee Chairman of the 24th Bangkok Universiade

Maj Gen Charouck Arirachakaran, Technical Committee Chairman of the 24th Bangkok Universiade, revealed that the competition and training venues for each sporting discipline are now under renovation. However, he is quite certain that all sites will be completed in June and ready for readiness test by sports associations the following month. Charouck said Thammasat Rangsit Sports Complex will be the main competition venue for the 24th Bangkok Universiade, which will take place between August 8 and 18. He added that he has been continually discussing with Thammasat University about the progress made on the renovation task at all competition sites. “The Thammasat Rangsit Sports Complex will serve as the main venue for the Bangkok Universiade. Although most of the competitions will be held there, it will not pose any problem” said Charouck. “As for Muang Thong Thani, which will serve as the main venues for gymnastics, table tennis, fencing and volleyball, the Organizing Committee has allocated around Bt50 million to rent the competition area there. I believe that all sites there will be well-prepared ahead of the competition period.” According to Charouck, the rainy season in August might affect the staging of the competition. Heavy downpour might play havoc to the on-going competitions, especially in some outdoor sports events. However, the Organizing Committee has already prepared optional venues in case those main competition sites will be affected by the rain. Players have to wait patiently until it stops raining and they can resume their matches only when the water is removed and the courts are fully cleared. Charouck admitted that there is no simple solution to this problem, but he is upbeat that a better solution is expected soon. “Apart from staging gymnastics, table tennis, fencing and volleyball at Muang Thong Thani, the Organizing Committee also plans to display an exhibition on His Majesty the King’s anniversary of his 80th birthday in his great honour. Additionally, we will also have an exhibition on the history of the Universiade from the past to the present,” he concluded.
