CIS and Eastern Europe University Sports Seminar in Kazan

Invited by the Russian Student Sports Union (RSSU) with President Oleg Matytsin and by the Republic of Tatarstan under the leadership of President Shaimiev Mintimer and Prime Minister R.N. Minnikhanov, an international scientific-practical seminar based on problems of student sport in CIS and countries of Eastern Europe with support of FISU took place in Kazan, capi-tal of Tatarstan, from April 19th to 22nd. President Shaimiev Mintimer thanked the participants from more than 25 countries for having accepted the invitation to come to Kazan. "This seminar is a big event for Tatarstan, and we are happy if we can contribute to this wonderful movement of student sports," he said. "We can not find anything better to unifying young people than sport. Your mission is enormous, and it is very important to involve CIS and Eastern Europe countries actively in the move-ment of FISU," President Mintimer added.

FISU President George Killian thanked especially the Prime Minister Minnikhanov for a letter he received after Kazan has lost its bid for the 2011 Summer Universiade. "We lost to a better city," Mr Minnikhanov wrote to the President of FISU, which shows the true spirit of sport-manship not only of the Prime Minister of Tatarstan but also of the very enthusiast people of this dynamic Republic. Mr Killian also said that he was not only very pleased to be in Kazan for the first time, but also felt that University sport is so important for the Republic of Tatar-stan and the Russian Federation. Among the invited speakers in the plenary session of the first day, FISU Secretary Roch Cam-pana gave an overview over the FISU history and pointed out the active and important role which CIS and the Eastern Europe countries always have played in FISU as host of events but also as participants at the Universiades and WUC.

EUSA President Alberto Gualtieri presented a new track of future interactions between re-gional and continental association with FISU and showed his hypothesis of relations with the world's students associations, in which the Continental Federations will play a new role in FISU. RSSU President Oleg Matytsin showed the tendencies and an outlook of the Russian Student Sport Union development, which includes more than 700 higher educational establishments in Russia which have close collaboration with RSSU. FISU Assessor Kemal Tamer reported on issues and solutions by organizing and hosting the Summer Universiade in Izmir. Sinisa Jasnic, CEO of UBOC 2009 and also FISU Assessor, pre-sented a paper about "FISU interaction with state and commercial organizations" and showed very interesting international and regional aspects. Leonz Eder, President of CIP FISU and also Assessor, introduced the FISU Media Department and showed the participants of the different countries, how they could benefit of the FISU media archives and be more present on the traditional and modern means of FISU communications. Marian Dymalski, FISU Asses-sor, presented his ideas for "FISU in the future". On behalf of the African University Sports Federation (FASU) FISU Assessor Malumbethe Ralethe expressed his greetings to the organiz-ers of this seminar as well as Julio Jakob, President of COSUD. Both of them showed the strong interest of their organisations to be part of FISU and its activities.
