Sevde Mavi (TUR), gold medallist -51kg

New World University Champions were crowned in the Hall of Sports yesterday, July 18th. The 10th edition of the World University Taekwondo Championship was more than fortunate for Sevde Mavi from Turkey. Mavi took the gold in the final match against Hui-Chiao Luan (TPE). ‘I am so, so happy. I expected the medal. The competition was tough, all opponents were very good, but so was I.’ We asked Sevde how long she prepared for this championships. Her reply was sincere: ‘I have been practicing a lot. It took me years without a single break to prepare myself.’ When it comes to her future plans, Sevde Mavi is confident that she will be successful in Belgrade 2009, too. ‘I will participate in the Universiade and will aim for the gold’, pointed out Mavi.

Jin-Ah Nam (KOR), gold medallist -55kg

Jin Ah Nam (KOR) won in the weight class up to 55 kg, beating Yi Hsuan Tseng (TPE) in the final match. ‘I am so excited. It was very important for me to return home with the gold medal. I will always remember Belgrade because I won the World University Championships in this beautiful country’, says Jih Ah.

Rouhollah Talebi KahangI (IRI), gold medallist -78kg

Rouhollah Talebi Kahangl won in the weight class up to 78 kg, beating André Bilia (BRA) in the fight to decide the new World University Champion. ‘I am very happy. I expected this fight. I had tough matches but I concentrated on my fight. I am still impressed, and can’t feel anything right now, but this medal surely means a lot to me. I am young and my career in the competitions has yet to develop. Being the World Gold medalist is a dream coming true’, said Rouhollah Talebi Kahangl.

Vanja Babic (SRB), gold medallist +84kg

The hosts had reasons to celebrate. Vanja Babic from the Serbian national team won the gold medal in the weight class over 84kg and made the day enjoyable to everyone in Serbia. Babic won the first World University gold medal for Serbia, and this on his 27th birthday. ‘I couldn’t think of a better birthday present. All my friends from the national team supported me from the audience and I would like to thank them. I am so happy because I managed to win the gold medal in an excellent competition. I hope that all participants in the World University Championships are enjoying Belgrade’, Vanja Babic pointed out.

The day ended with a the sightseeing tour of the Belgrade organized by the Organizing Committee for the all participants of the 10th World University Championship.
