2007 SU: University Students Warm Up in Melbourne

Before 200 Australian University students head to Thailand for the 2007 Summer Universiade, many aquatic student athletes will embark on Melbourne for the 2007 FINA World Swimming Championship being held from 17 March to 1 April. Australia will be represented by 85 athletes at the FINA World Swimming Championships across four aquatic disciplines. 43 of these athletes are currently studying higher education courses at University. The FINA World Swimming Championship is an event which in the past has seen both present and past Universiade representatives medal and achieve personal bests. 2007 will be no different with the Championships hosting Swimming, Diving and Men’s Water Polo, all a part of the Summer Universiade. The Diving Team for the 2007 Summer Universiade has been announced with three out of the eight students representing Australia at the FINA World Swimming Championships. Alexandra Croak (The University of Sydney), Scott Robertson (Queensland University of Technology) and Grant Nel (Australian Catholic University) will taste another multi-sport event and see their opposition in action before August, where they are expecting to medal. With the Swimming team and Men’s Water Polo team for the Summer Universiade yet to be announced, performance at the FINA World Swimming Championships are vital for the 43 students vying for positions. The 2007 Universiade will be held in Bangkok, Thailand from 8 - 18 August. Australian University Sport selects teams to represent Australia in consultation with the relevant National Sporting Organisations. The Australian Team will compete in the majority of the sports but not necessarily all of them. Australia will be competing in Athletics, Basketball, Diving, Fencing, Golf, Gymnastics - artistic (men), Shooting, Softball, Swimming, Table Tennis, Taekwondo, Tennis, and Water Polo (men).
