October 17th, 2008

FISU President George Killian
On October 17th, the FISU Executive Committee started its two day meeting in Belgrade, Serbia, the host city of the 2009 Summer Universiade. After the welcome words of FISU President George Killian, the EC approved the minutes of the last meeting in Harbin, China last February. The meeting got well on its way with the reports of the President, the Treasurer and the Secretary-General.
After the coffee break, the FISU lawyers William Hybl (USA), Chair of the Legal Committee, together with its members Scott Blackmun (USA), Etienne Vauthier (BEL) and Hans Bodmer (SUI) gave an update of the changes in the legal status of FISU.
After the lunch the report of the Universiade Evaluation Committees followed. Stefan Bergh (SWE) gave an overview of the work of these committees which evaluate the bidding candidates for Winter and Summer Universiades. The overall feeling is great satisfaction with the working process of these committees as the feedback from the candidate cities was quite positive about the transparent selection method.
Next the floor was given to Verena Burk (GER), Chair of the Women’s Committee who reported about the Women’s Committee Survey towards our member associations. A number of suggestions were retained from this survey, such as workshops and equal number of competitive opportunities and guidelines for the NUSFs.
Dr. Larry Rink, Chair of the Medical Committee gave an overview of the changes but asked a moment of silence first for the loss of CMI member Filippo Rettagliata who died recently. Dr. Rink gave an update regarding the WADA activities. He also briefly explained the new WADA system, the so-called ‘ADAMS’ which stands for Anti-doping Administration and Management System, a web-based communication mechanism for athletes and Anti-Doping Organisations to share data, such as TUE’s, but also for Laboratory Communication between FISU and WADA. Dr. Rink also proposed a number of changes for the FISU CMI, such as the implementation of a TUE Committee. He also gave a brief overview of the medical preparations for the 2009 Winter Universiade in Harbin which are highly satisfactory. For the 2009 Summer Universiade in Belgrade a number of changes were made and now the Military Hospital will be in charge.
Next the floor was given to the International Press Committee. Leonz Eder (SUI) the CPI Chair gave a short overview of the latest activities, such as CPI meeting in April at the FISU HQ, where the goals and aims, strengths and weaknesses were discussed. Mr. Eder represented the Press Commission at the AIPS Congress in Beijing, China last May where he made a presentation about FISU. Verena Burk (GER) CPI member gave feedback about the proposed activities such as the publication of a newsletter, the creation of an editorial board for the magazine as well as the renewal of the concept and contents of the website.
The first day of the EC meeting ended with an extensive report by Claude-Louis Gallien, FISU 1st Vice-President and CESU Chair, with different reports from the 2008 FISU Forum, the CESU Meeting, the 2009 Winter Universiade Sports Science Conference in Harbin, the FISU Rectors’ Forum and the 2009 FISU Conference, both in Belgrade.
