The FISU Evaluation Group at the Press Conference

The final day of the Evaluation visit in Maribor was dedicated to a lot of meetings. The FISU evaluation group met first for internal discussions, followed by a meeting with representatives from the Organising Committee of the candidate city. In the general remarks, Leonz Eder, Chair of the Evaluation Group, said, that the FISU delegation was very much impressed by the following facts: - great support for the candidature of Maribor by different institutions on all levels (politically, by Universities, Federations, the Slovenian University Sports Association, the citizens of Maribor and the other concerned municipalities - enthusiasm and dynamism of the involved parties and persons - concept of the Universiade which helps to restructure the north-eastern region of Slovenia, to achieve synergy effects at building public and sports infrastructures and touristic capacities - compact event with the aim to bring all the athletes and officials close together - internationally experienced experts in most of the sport - high level accommodations

Roger Roth, CTI Chair and Robert Philip, CTI Vice Chair gave some recommodations con-cerning different sports, but were very satisfied over all with the preparations, the venues and the planning of constructions for new facilities. FISU Vice President Hassan Chikh contributed with remarks concerning the accommodation, Assessor Kairis Ulp talked about the transportation issues and Marian Dymalski gave some inputs for the financial projects. The discussions were very positive and constructive from both sides.

The last day of the Evaluation visits ended with a dinner and a vine cellar visit at Protner in Malecnik, hosted by the Students Union of Maribor. The OC of the candidate city of Maribor will now prepare the presentation for the FISU Executive Committee, which will be held on May 31 in Brussels.

At the Press conference in the City Hall, Franc Kangler, Mayor of Maribor, justified the high financial impact in the Universiade and underlined the fact that the long term legacy for Maribor legitimates this huge engagement. Leonz Eder explained the new schedule fixed by FISU for the bidding procedure and said that the slogan "we are ready" is more than realistic. He encouraged Maribor, which will also be the Cultural Capital of Europe in 2012, to use these important international events for the promotion of the city, the region and the country. The Press conference was attended by nearly 30 journalists from electronic and written media.

At the University of Maribor the FISU delegation was invited by Rector Prof. Dr. Ivan Rozman. He promised the full support of his university with 27'000 students and 1'600 staff members for the project of the WU 2013. Most of the volunteers will be recruited at his university.

Both the OC and the Evaluation group are persuaded that Maribor is ready to host the 26 Winter Universiade in 2013.
