On the second day of the Evaluation visit in Maribor for the 2013 Winter Universiade, the six FISU delegates visited the existing venues and the venues and accommodation places un-der construction around the snow stadium and Pohorje Radvanje. The largest Ski center in Slovenia consists of over 100 km on ski-slopes, 50 ski lifts and 10 km illuminated ski-slopes. ‘We will plan to include some night competitions in our Universiade program’, Marko Rataj, Technical Director from Ski Club Branik said. ‘This attracts not only a lot of spectators but is also very popular among the competitors and will certainly please FISU’, he added. These venues are in walking distance from the Athletes’ Village and the FISU Hotel Habakuk. ‘Our goal is to organize a compact event and to bring all the athletes and officials close together, within an urban and cultural area’, Otmar Kugovnik, President of SUSA, explained.
The Ice Hockey Venue in Maribor is ready
The Candidate city of Maribor wants to set new standards for the Universiade village. ‘New capacities, new hotels and apartments will provide high standard accommodation which will be used for tourist purposes after the Universiade’, Matjaz Pecovnik, Secretary-General of SUSA, said. Indeed the Evaluation group of FISU was very much impressed by the luxury standard of the apartments, equipped with Wellness and Spa. In total, 6,600 beds will be available, 3,000 in the new Universiade village, 1,500 mostly for volunteers in student hostels and 2,100 elsewhere in Maribor. The main village restaurant in a multipurpose tent construc-tion has a capacity of 2,000 seats on 3,500 m².
After a gondola tour to the Hotel Bolfenk on the top of the mountain, the Evaluation group was given a demonstration of the superb Slovenian cuisine and hospitality, followed by the inspection of the Tabor Ice Hall. Andrej Verlic, Vice-Mayor and Head Coach of the National and the Maribor Women's Ice Hockey Team, presented the Men's National Team of Slovenia in a training session. ‘Ice hockey with a men's and a women's tournament will certainly be very popular at the Universiade’, he said. Robert Philip, CTI Vice-Chair, underlined the fact that Slovenia with only around 1,000 players did a good job in reaching the Worlds number 16. In the evening Ladislav Pepelnik, Vice-Mayor of Ruce, offered a lunch in the new sports center of his city which has 7,700 inhabitants and more than 60 sports and social clubs. ‘We are very proud to receive the first Curling center in Slovenia which will not only be used for the Universiade but also will serve as the national Curling center’, Mr Pepelnik said.
