2008 WUC Bridge: Update

The 4th World University Bridge Championship will be hosted in Lodz, Poland from June 3rd to 9th, 2008. City Lodz with 800,000 habitants is the second biggest city in Poland, and is an important economic, academic, cultural and sport center, located in the very center of Poland, 130 km from Warsaw and 1500 km from Paris. Lodz is called "the city of four cultures" – Polish, Jewish, German and Russian, for their peaceful coexistence in Lodz, but when one walks down its streets, it can be easily figured out that there are many more. The wealth of the city's historical monuments includes unique textile factories and residential complex. Lodz attractions are not limited to admirable 19th-century monuments, and walks along the beautiful Piotrkowska street. Many cultural events, such as music and film festivals, theatre reviews and concerts, are held in the city. The September "Festival of Dialogue of Four Cultures" is just one of the plethora which also includes business fairs. A major academic centre, Lodz is the seat of well-known universities and academic institutions. Organization Committee The Organization Committee comprises of the representatives of national and local University Sports Federation, the Polish Bridge Union and others, with prof. Pior Kula as the President of Organizing Committee. Office duties are provided by the University Sports Federation in Lodz bureau. Academic authorities associated in Convent of Rectors of Public Universities have been officially invited to take up the patronage of Championships. Volunteers will be recruited from those universities. For some of them, the Championships will be an obligatory part of their student practice. The organizer provides volunteer services for every delegation. Experience Lodz University Sports Federation has organized several international sport events, including the World University Wrestling Championship in 2004, and High Jump and Pole Vault Meetings in 2000-2002. The federation’s organizing skills were appreciated by the European Universities Sports Association by granting the privilege to organize European Universities Handball Championship in 2007. Sports Facilities The choice of sports facilities has not been decided yet. There are several suitable locations on the university campus, including sports and conference centers. The main venue can be located in the University Sport Centre which consists of 2 sports halls; alternatively the event can be held in new buildings of the Faculty of Marketing and Management, University of Lodz. Accommodation The Athletes’ accommodation will be the Student's House no. 11 of the University of Lodz in Lumumby Campus, refurbished in 2004. Comfortable 2+2 studios with bathrooms in refurbished buildings are perfect for accommodation. During the World University Wrestling Championship in 2004, the athletes were very satisfied with its standard. All rooms have Internet access. Within the university campus, participants will have access to training facilities, sauna, swimming pool, shops and cafeteria. Restaurants The university restaurant, also situated on campus, can serve up to 200 meals at a given time. The canteen will be opened throughout the day and serve a varied menu. It is located 200m form the accommodation venue. Transport Participants will be collected from and taken back to the bus station, railway station or Lodz airport (code LCJ). Lodz Airport has direct connections with Dublin, Nottingham, London, Paris, Rome, Shannon and of course with Warsaw Okecie airport, operated by Ryanair, LOT and Centralwings.
